We all have raised our wine glasses in a special toast and uttered the words -To Your Health. While we do not throw our wine glasses in the fireplace anymore there is a good deal to be said about the health benefits of wine, both red and white varieties.

Will it give us an increase in longevity? Some very impressive statistics are coming out from Researchers who have found red wines rich in flavonoids are actually good for our health. These flavonoids are known for their antioxidant properties which work with the body to resist viruses and carcinogens among other perks, such as helping your body to resist cancer and cardiovascular disease.

But here is the caveat, like most things the drinking of wine should be done in moderation. In the 16th Century a Swiss physician was quoted as having wrote “Wine is a food, a medicine and a poison - it is just a question of dose”. If too much is consumed then the benefit of the flavonoids will have the opposite effect on your health. There are certain types of red wine that have a higher amount of both flavonoids and antioxidants. Among these wine are Cabernet Sauvignon, pinot Noir and Petit Syrah.

Many health providers promote a one or two four ounce glass of wine per day for men and one four ounce glass for woman. I do know many women who would dispute that discrepancy for women. So adding a glass or two of red or white wine to your diet can be beneficial.

The incidents of heart disease in France is said to be among the lowest throughout the world. Many regions in France are perfect for growing grapes and making wine. The French population has been doing this for ages and have been able to enjoy the benefits from the wine. The wine regions in France produce wines that are tannic and contain high levels of procyandin (an antioxidant). These levels tend to be higher that other wine areas throughout the world.

Not all wines are high in these flavonoids. Wines that are dry such as Zinfandels and Merlots are lower in these flavoniods. Having said that, they are still higher than white wines. But, do not let that stop you from enjoying them as they will provide you with health benefits providing you drink them in moderation.

There are many health benefits of wine which should not be overlooked. Of course the primary benefits of wine include the absolute pleasure of laying around with good friends and a great glass or two of wine.
