Oscar Wilde was known to have said that the best way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it. And yes, temptation is very hard to resist and we find ourselves succumbing to it. Particularly if the temptations come in the form of a luscious bar of rich chocolate, a slice of cheesecake or a juicy hamburger with everything on it. But resist we must, especially if we want to be healthy and look good by getting rid of those extra pounds.

Yes, it can be quite a struggle. But we must resist the urge to eat whatever we like, we must not give in to what our appetite dictates. The thing is, instead of eating less, we find that we eat even more than we should.

But don’t fret! There’s help to be had. You can make use of appetite suppressants. As the name suggests, these help you fight off your cravings and hunger pangs by making you feel full or by curbing your appetite. You see, being overweight can sometimes be a cycle. When you are overweight, you tend to get depressed. In response to your depression, you eat more. Then, the more you eat, the more you feel depressed. And the cycle goes on and on. Also, studies show that those who are overweight do have trouble controlling their appetite and this can become quite a struggle.

Appetite suppressants are a way to break free and start the process of losing weight by eating less. This way, you are able to stick to your diet and concentrate your energies on losing weight, rather than in fighting the urges and temptations to get that extra slice or to grab that bite or two.

One kind of appetite suppressant work by emphasizing the function of the substance, serotonin. This enzyme is partly responsible for our moods, sexual desires, sleep habits and yes, our appetite. Serotonin gives you a feeling of well-being and at the same time, keeps the appetite in check. These kinds of appetite suppressants actually inhibit the uptake (or re-absorption into the body of serotonin). It also encourages the production and increase of serotonin.

Aside from this, you can also try what are called symphathomimetics, which are amphetamine-like appetite suppressants. These give your blood pressure and heart rate a boost. They even increase the activity of your brain. Symphathomimetics also makes sure that there are higher levels of noradenaline in the body. Noradranalene helps curb the appetite by tricking the brain into thinking that the body is already full and has no need to eat.
